This project explored what it really takes to win a World Cup. Analysing all 22 previous tournaments ahead of the 2026 competition, it uncovered eight recurring themes that have shaped every champion—from tactical revolutions and individual brilliance to the political and cultural forces behind football's greatest triumphs.
A true labour of love, the project was presented by Sunderland fan Jonathan Wilson and designed by fellow Sunderland fan me—yes, that's why Granit Xhaka sneaks an appearance!
While licensing restrictions meant a lot of footage of iconic players couldn't be used, there was still an incredible archive of imagery to draw from. The World Cup is steeped in nostalgia, bringing back memories of Maradona's "Hand of God", that unforgettable solo goal, and countless other moments. I wanted the piece to feel like flicking through a well-worn scrapbook, with handwritten annotations, torn edges, and layered textures that celebrate the emotion of the tournament.
